a conventional backcross Traditionally, congenic
mice are generated by random sequential backcrossing into
the target (recipient) strain. With each generation the amount
of donor strain DNA decreases on average by 50%. It may take
up to 2.5 years to produce a congenic strain (backcross generation
N10) containing 99.9% of the recipient genome.
