Animal Production Program

  01S50 N:NIH(S)
NIH

Origin: Derived from N:GP(S) colony in 1936.
Genetics:
Albino

Diseases
    Neoplastic (Induced):

  • An N-tropic virus induced from BALB/c embryo fibroblasts (BALB; virus-1) induced myeloid metaplasia. (341)

    Non-Neoplastic (Spontaneous):

  • A variant of Citrobacter freundii was identified as the etiologic agent of transmissible murine colonic hyperplasia. (038)

    Non-Neoplastic (Induced):

  • Transmissible murine colonic hyperplasia was induced by oral inoculation with Citrobaxter freundii variant 4280; mortality was low in NIH Swiss mice but mucosal hyperplasia was greater than in three inbred strains tested. Hyperplasia was most severe 16 days after inoculation, then regressed; hyperplastic response appeared to be a defense mechanism of replacing infected mucosal epithelial cells with newly migrated, uninfected epithelium. (337,037)

Other Characteristics
    Immunologic:

  • Although no infectious virus was present, NIH Swiss mice consistently and independent of age were positive for gs antigen (negative for GIX antigen). (607)
  • Used extensively for pertussis HSF testing. (088)

    Biochemical:

  • Two murine leukemia virus proteins, p30 and reverse transcriptase found in gravid uteri throughout gestation; both proteins were most concentrated on first day after mating, decreased by 90% or more near mid-gestation, and increased greatly by first day after parturition. (712)

    Misc:

  • Infectious leukemia virus has never been detected; iododeoxyuridine induction of embryo tissue cultures did not yield virus. (607)
  • Prototype Fv-1n stock. (410)
  • A survey of allozyme poloymorphism at 36 loci indicated strikingly similar gene structures in NIH Swiss-Webster, CD-1, and a Swiss-Webster colony from Eppley Institute, and no evidence of random fixation of segregating allozyme alleles. Gpi-1b was fixed in N:NHI(S); Got-2 (0.97b, 0.03a) and Id-1 (0.97a, 0.03b) were headed for fixation. (515)
  • Carries gene for short ear (se), bent tail (bt), and GPD-1b. (246)
